When does a church become unviable? I pondered this while attending Mass last Sunday at St. Stan's, the Adams church slated for deconsecration.

The obvious answer -- when attendance dwindles -- doesn't seem to explain it, because 300 or so worshippers of all ages were present.

I usually look forward to reading Mr. Bushika's "Word From The Hills," but one of his latest columns, titled "How many must die?" sure let me down.

Thank you, Mr. Saracen, for clarifying (letter Friday about attendance at St. Michael's Cathedral in Springfield). By the way, is a glass filled to 50 percent of capacity half-empty or half-full?

In regards to the church closings in North Adams and Adams, there are many alternative solutions. Admittedly, I write as an outsider, but the buildings are big, beautiful and full of potential. I wonder if the diocese has considered innovative programs that might revive the buildings' contribution to the area (and might also preserve religious use, albeit
